After a hearty breakfast, we embark on a full day of sightseeing in the Kathmandu Valley, including visits to Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swayambhunath Stupa, and Patan Durbar Square.
In the morning, we explore Kathmandu, Nepal's largest city, where a rich and diverse cultural heritage began during the 14th century under the Malla Dynasty. Artisans, supported by the nobility, created temples, monasteries, and intricate courtyards that provide a fascinating architectural history of the city. We visit Durbar Square and the Golden Roofed Taleju Temple. King Mahendra Mala restored the current temple in 1562. As you approach the entrance to Hanuman Dhoka Durbar, the old Royal Palace, a statue of Hanuman, the monkey god, guards the gate, wrapped in a red cloak, with a singer, a mixture of red dust and mustard oil, covering the deity's face. Don't miss the House of the Living Goddess, where the virgin goddess known as Kumari may occasionally appear in an upper-floor window. Wander through the bustling bazaars and labyrinthine streets of the Old Town.
Next, we visit Swayambhunath Stupa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world's oldest shrine, with a history dating back over 2,500 years. It is perched on a 3km hill in the western outskirts of Kathmandu and holds immense sacred importance in Buddhism. Legend has it that when the Kathmandu Valley was a lake 2,000 years ago, a single lotus flower grew in the center. When Bodhisattva Manjushree drained the lake with his sword, the lotus settled on a hill and magically transformed into a stupa, earning Swayambhunath the nickname of the "self-made stupa." This ancient stupa offers stunning views of the Kathmandu Valley, featuring the benevolent eyes of Buddha painted on all four sides, with the mysterious third eye symbolizing true wisdom.
In the afternoon, we explore Patan Durbar Square, also known as Lalitpur – the city of artisans, a haven of fine arts. This locale is home to Kathmandu Valley's most skilled craftsmen, who have preserved ancient techniques and lost wax processes used to create exquisite sculptures. You'll encounter a variety of items, from thangka paintings to metal handicrafts, at reasonable prices. Patan is enclosed by four stupas built in the 3rd century AD by Emperor Ashoka, each symbolizing the Buddhist Wheel of Righteousness (Dharma Chakra). In the heart of Patan lies Patan Durbar Square, a site filled with ancient palaces, pagoda temples, stone baths, Hindu and Buddhist statues, engravings, and bronze carvings. One of the highlights of Patan is the palace of the Malla Kings. Within the palace complex is the stone temple of Lord Krishna, constructed in the 16th century A.D. The Royal Bath, known as 'Tushahity,' is another showcase of exquisite stone and bronze craftsmanship.

After Arrival from Pokhara, we will visit Pashupatinath Temple, Boudhanath Stupa, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square.
Pashupatinath Temple: This majestic temple, renowned for its architectural beauty, is situated on the banks of the sacred Bagmati River. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Hindu god of destruction, Pashupatinath Temple is considered the most formidable of all Shiva temples. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temple features an ornate pagoda housing the sacred linga, or phallic symbol, of Lord Shiva. Thousands of pilgrims from around the world visit this temple annually. However, non-Hindu visitors are restricted from entering the temple premises. The temple can be observed from the eastern bank of the Bagmati River. Pashupatinath also serves as Nepal's most famous Hindu crematorium. In Hindu culture, the deceased's body is wrapped in cloth, placed on a bamboo litter, and carried to the cremation site, where the eldest son of the family conducts the cremation. The ashes are collected and scattered into the Bagmati River, which eventually flows into the holy Ganges. Arya Ghat holds special importance as the site where members of the royal family were cremated. The primary cremation site is Bhasmeshvar Ghat, the most widely used crematorium in the Kathmandu Valley.
Boudhanath Stupa: The Boudhanath Stupa stands as one of Kathmandu's most impressive landmarks and is the epicenter of Tibetan Buddhism, featuring one of the largest spherical Giant Stupa Mandalas. The stupa is built on a massive three-story mandala-style base and stands 36 meters (118 feet) in height. The base of the pagoda is adorned with 108 small statues of Amida Nyorai, complete with prayer wheels. Thousands of pilgrims circumambulate the stupa clockwise, spinning the prayer wheels each day. The rotation of the prayer wheel is believed to correspond to the chanting of the mantra. The stupa's gigantic mandala design makes it one of the largest spherical stupas in Nepal and one of the most extensive ancient stupas globally.
Bhaktapur Durbar Square: In the afternoon, you will visit the ancient royal capital of Bhaktapur, a fortified city from the 9th century situated in the Kathmandu Valley. This city is renowned for its medieval art and architecture. Stroll along the cobblestone pathways and marvel at the ancient structures while observing the hustle and bustle of today's town square. Bhaktapur Durbar Square is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and its monuments reflect the glorious era of the Malla dynasty when art and architecture thrived in the valley. While in Bhaktapur Durbar Square, make sure to visit the Nyatapola Temple, a unique "five-story" temple that stands tall as a prominent landmark. Dedicated to Bhairav, the god of fear, the Bhairavnath Temple is a three-story temple celebrated for its artistic grandeur, situated beside the famous five-story Nyatapola Temple. The Golden Gate serves as the entrance to the palace, adorned with 55 intricately carved 15th-century windows. This Golden Gate is a masterpiece of artistic craftsmanship that enhances the grandeur of the Palace Square, featuring structures dating from the 13th to the 18th century.
