Gaan Pyakhan

Gaan Pyakhan is a sacred ritual dance performed in Patan Durbar Square, rooted in a legend from over 350 years ago. King Sri Nivasa Malla once witnessed the divine appearance of the Asta Matrikas (Eight Mother Goddesses) dancing into the royal court of Mulchowk. Awed by their presence, the King later institutionalized the dance to honor them and prevent divine offense, upon his priests' advice.

Held annually from Ghatsthapana to Ekadashi, the Gaan Pyakhan is performed at Mulchowk, Kartik Dabali, and Nakabail Tol, featuring 13 deities—the eight Matrikas and five Newar guardian deities. Unlike other masked dances in the valley, this one is performed by Bajracharya and Shakya boys from a young age, who observe strict rituals, fasting, and receive training in Charya Nritya, a tantric meditative dance.

The dance is believed to dispel the eight great fears and invoke protection, harmony, and prosperity for the community. Though royal patronage has faded, this deeply spiritual tradition continues through generational dedication and cultural pride.
