Beginning the Jumolhari Trek, your journey starts with a 12 km drive north from Paro to the historic ruins of Drugyel Dzong, situated at 2,580 meters. Here, your trekking team will greet you and provide a brief introduction before you set off. The trek commences with a gentle descent along a wide trail that follows the serene Pachhu River.

The trail gently ascends through meticulously tended rice terraces and millet fields, unfolding into wide valleys sprinkled with apple orchards, traditional farmsteads, and the quaint villages of Mitshi Zampa and Sangatan. Continuing onward, you pass through a thick blue pine forest before arriving at the army post in Gunitsawa (2,810 meters), where trekking permits are checked.

After crossing the Pachhu River on a rustic wooden bridge, the trail ascends to Sharna Zampa, located at 2,870 meters. This tranquil campsite, nestled in open meadows surrounded by trees, provides a perfect setting for your first night in the mountains.

The trail follows the Pachhu (Paro River), winding through scenic pine, oak, and spruce forests. After about two hours of steady ascent and descent, you’ll reach Shingkharap, a stone house located at 3,110 meters, serving as an important rest stop for travelers and locals alike. Just past the bridge on the left, a hot lunch is ready to be enjoyed.

At a nearby trail junction, the left path traces an ancient trade route, while the right leads to a wooden bridge—the route you’ll take. Starting above the tree line at 3,700 meters, today's trek begins with a climb from camp to the army post. Following the river, the trail reveals stunning views of the surrounding peaks. The path navigates through muddy terrain and passes a mani wall before entering yak herding territory.

A warm lunch awaits at a yak herder’s camp, offering insight into their traditional lifestyle. Afterward, the trek continues past the yak settlements of Soe and Takethang. The final stretch crosses a plateau, ascends along a stream bed, and leads to Dangochang village, culminating at the breathtaking campsite of Jangothang at 4,040 meters. From here, panoramic vistas of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake provide an unforgettable backdrop.

Setting out on a four-hour acclimatization hike north of camp, you’ll ascend an expansive, open slope with no marked trail. For those seeking a challenge, continuing upward to 4,895m provides a spectacular vantage point, surpassing the height of Mont Blanc, with sweeping vistas of Mount Jumolhari.

Along the way, watch for rare wildlife like blue sheep, Himalayan rhubarb, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and the vivid blue poppy flower. The Jangothang base—a flat, grassy plateau crowned by the ruins of an ancient fortress beneath the towering peaks of Jumolhari and Jichu Drake—creates a stunning backdrop for your trek.

Alternatively, trekkers can opt for a shorter, two-hour hike to the twin Tshophu Lakes en route to Bongtela Pass. Given the altitude, many experience mild symptoms of mountain sickness, making this day a valuable acclimatization pause.

The trek starts by following a stream for about thirty minutes before crossing a bridge on the right side. From there, the trail ascends to the first ridge, rewarding trekkers with expansive views of Jumolhari (7,314m), Jichu Drake (6,989m), and Tsherim Gang (6,789m). The route then gently descends into a valley where the terrain flattens briefly before climbing again toward Ngye La Pass at 4,830 meters.

The Laya-Gasa route branches off from the Jumolhari trek as the path rises toward a small white Chorten situated on a ridge above the camp. Heading south, the trail follows the deep Mo Chhu valley, tracing the western side of a stark, treeless expanse. It steadily climbs along the riverbank before crossing the Mo Chhu and tackling a steep two-hour climb up to the Yeli La Pass at 4,942 meters.

At the pass, clear skies grant expansive views of towering peaks such as Jumolhari, Gangchen Ta, Tsherim Gang, and Masang Gang. The route then descends alongside a mountain stream to a shelter, continuing further down to the Shodu campsite at 4,100 meters. This peaceful meadow, marked by a solitary Chorten, provides a serene spot to rest amid the striking natural surroundings.

Reaching this point marks a return to the tree line, where the trail begins to follow the Thimphu River. As you descend, the path winds through a lush forest filled with rhododendron, juniper, and alpine trees, creating a serene and refreshing atmosphere. Along the way, you’ll be treated to dramatic views of sheer cliff faces and cascading waterfalls that add to the day’s natural beauty.

A scenic riverside stop provides the perfect setting for a hot lunch, offering both rest and reflection. After the break, the trail makes a gentle ascent through forested terrain, gradually leading to the ancient ruins of Barshong Dzong.  Once a key supply post for Lingzhi Dzong, this historical site evokes the strategic importance of these remote highland routes. Tonight’s campsite, located at approximately 3,600 meters, lies near the ruins—peacefully nestled within forested hills, offering a quiet retreat surrounded by history and nature.

Following breakfast at the camp, your final day of trekking begins with a gentle ascent to the nearby farm road. After a short walk along the road, the trail detours into a lush forest filled with rhododendrons, birch, and conifers, descending steadily into the heart of the woodland. The descent becomes steeper as you approach the banks of the Thimphu Chhu River.

The route continues along the river’s left bank, undulating over ridges and dipping into side valleys as it winds its way south. This part of the trail features a mix of sharp descents and short climbs, offering a final taste of Bhutan’s rich natural beauty. Eventually, you’ll reach Dodena at 2,600 meters, where your journey on foot concludes. Here, Bhutan Travelers Transport will meet you for your drive back to Thimphu, marking the end of this unforgettable trekking adventure.
