Along this picturesque route, you'll visit Simtokha Dzong, officially known as 'Sangkak Zabdhon Phodrang' or the Palace of the Profound Meaning of Secret Mantras. Constructed in 1629 by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it is often recognized as the first Dzong built in Bhutan and acts as a gateway to the Thimphu Valley. The name Simtokha is derived from "Sinmo" (demoness) and "do" (stone), and the site is believed to have been chosen to guard against a demon that was said to have vanished into the nearby rock. This dzong holds historical significance as the first structure to integrate both monastic and administrative functions in Bhutan.
