Gai Jatra

Gai Jatra, also known as the Festival of Cows, is a distinctive and traditional celebration primarily observed in the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal. This festival serves as a commemoration of the deceased and typically takes place in July or August, depending on the Nepali lunar calendar. Gai Jatra's principal objective is to remember and honor those who passed away in the preceding year. It is believed that participating in this festival aids the departed souls in finding peace and guidance in the afterlife. A distinguishing feature of Gai Jatra is the procession featuring individuals, especially children, attired as cows. These participants, referred to as "Gaine" or "Gai Jatra," don cow costumes and paint their faces before parading through the streets of the Kathmandu Valley, accompanied by traditional music, dance, and singing.
